I have had the very distinct pleasure of photographing this gorgeous family for nearly 10 years now...with each new member of the family arriving and expanding their little clan. I can't tell you how much I love revisiting clients like these, it's such an honour to be the photographer they entrust with recording those priceless memories of their family history (It's also frightening just how fast they grow up)
We had an idyllic early morning shoot on the beach down in Dorset in August, before the hoardes of holidaymakers descended onto the beach, making the most of the peace and tranquility. That's also when you get the best, softest light. I love the pastel tones of what they're wearing complement the pastels of the beach huts too. Just heaven.
Beaches always have the most incredible light, even in winter, and the best times to have a beach family photography session are almost always first thing in the morning or to capture the sunset on the beach. It's more atmospheric, quieter and the soft glow is just magical. There are some stunning beaches on our south coast in Dorset and Hampshire, I often undertake family portrait sessions at Hengistbury Head, Mudeford, Southbourne Beach and Avon beach among the many other options we are spoiled with.
As a portrait photographer, I do not approach a sitting as a quick image-making exercise. Each commission begins with observation: who the subject is, how they carry themselves, what atmosphere suits them, and what kind of portrait will still feel truthful and compelling many years from now. That combination of pre-production, direction, lighting control, and final artwork design is what separates a bespoke portrait commission from a standard photoshoot.
