What fine art portrait photography actually is

Fine art portrait photography isn't a headshot and it isn't a quick studio snap. It's a planned, highly personal session built around how someone wants to be seen and see themselves, not just how they look. I'm based in Wiltshire but shoot these sessions across the South of England, this particular one was in Battersea, South West London, and it really stuck with me, so I want to write it down properly.

A client of mine, successful, busy, had never really had photos taken of herself. Not out of neglect, just never quite felt the worth in it, or the need. She got in touch because she'd decided, quietly and on her own, that she wanted a proper set of portraits. Not for work, not for anyone else. For her.

Planning the session

We didn't just book a date and turn up. We had a few conversations first, just talking, me asking her how she wanted to be seen and remembered, and that's a harder question than it sounds. Most people haven't sat down and actually thought about that before, and it takes a bit of quiet and a bit of trust to get an honest answer. We built the whole concept around what she told me.

Then came the practical bit. I booked a full day at a styled studio (styledhomestudios.co.uk, if you're after the same), brought in my amazing hair & makeup artist (@carolinepowderandglow, she's brilliant), and we went through her own wardrobe together, picking pieces that actually felt like her, not just pieces that'd photograph well. Feeling right in what she's wearing matters more than people think.

On the day

My whole job was reassurance. Gentle direction, some deep chats, a lot of giggling and experimenting with different concepts as we went. By the afternoon she'd properly relaxed into it, and that's always when the best photos happen, once someone stops performing and starts just being there, feeling safe and guided.

The result

She ended up with two sets, really. A glossy, polished, professional set she can use wherever she needs. And a quieter, more beautiful set of portraits that are just her. Something to keep. Something her family will have one day, long after this particular Tuesday is forgotten.

She said she felt seen, and that's the whole point, honestly.

Why I want to do more of this

I want to do this for more women. Not just the ones who already think of themselves as "photogenic" or "photo-ready," but anyone who's never quite believed it was worth the fuss, or never found the time, or never felt they had a reason to.

It is worth the fuss. Every woman deserves a portrait like this.
