Private family portrait commissions in London, created with depth, warmth and a strong sense of legacy.

Family portrait commissions in London, created at home, in private gardens, squares, parks and other meaningful urban settings across the city. Gemma Brunton works particularly often in South West and Central London for families seeking portraiture that feels polished, discreet and naturally at ease within the rhythm of city life.

Why families commission me in London

In London, the appeal is often a combination of discretion, ease and setting - portraits made at home, in a private garden, or in a favourite part of the city, with an approach that feels calm, meaningful and visually refined.

Family life in the city has its own rhythms - homes are often elegant but busy, children and parents move between school, work and family commitments within the city landscape and time together can feel fleeting. A family portrait commission here should never feel over-controlled or formulaic but

guided calmly and created to be entirely personal to the family being photographed.

I create bespoke family portrait commissions for clients in London who want portraits with more depth than a set of pleasant images for the here and now. The aim is to make photographs that hold character, connection and atmosphere - portraits with legacy in mind that feel artful, but still alive.

Some commissions are photographed at home, where the familiarity of a townhouse, apartment, garden or interior gives the work intimacy and emotional texture. Others are shaped around the city itself: the urban landscape, bold architectural lines, favourite streets, private garden squares, or the parks and open spaces that form part of family life in London. The setting is always chosen for meaning rather than display.

Family portraits in London, at home and outdoors

For many families, the strongest portraits begin at home. Children are more at ease, the pace feels natural, and the photographs carry something of the real life of the family rather than the polish of a borrowed location. A drawing room, staircase, bedroom, kitchen or garden can all become part of the visual language of the commission.

But London also offers remarkable possibilities outdoors. Parks, common land, quiet mews streets, riverside walks, courtyards, terraces and favourite corners of the city can give a portrait sitting energy, atmosphere and a distinct sense of place. For some families, the right setting may be a walk through a park in the early morning, children enjoying a familiar green space, or portraits photographed in pockets of the city that have become woven into family memory.

The urban landscape can be used in a subtle and elegant way to provide context and backdrop, using stone, brick, railings, trees, pavements, paths, changing light and the rhythm of the streets that help create portraits that feel unmistakably 'London' while remaining centred on the family itself.

For families who value legacy

The families who come to me are often looking for portraits with meaning, images that can live in a home and deepen in significance over time.

If you are looking for an award-winning family portrait photographer in London with over fifteen years experience and want work that feels refined, personal and lasting, I would be delighted to hear from you.

I am also available for country house and location sessions outside London in Wiltshire and home counties as well as holiday homes and stunning locations in Mallorca. For more information about my approach to family portraiture, please see the Portraits of Childhood page.

Family portrait photography across South West and Central London

I photograph family portrait commissions across London, with particular focus on South West London and Central London. This includes areas such as Chelsea, Kensington, Notting Hill, Holland Park, Belgravia, Knightsbridge, South Kensington, Battersea, Clapham, Wandsworth, Richmond, Barnes, Fulham and nearby neighbourhoods where many families want portraits created either at home or in meaningful outdoor settings.

For some families, that means portraits in elegant interiors with access to a private garden or communal square. For others, it may mean working outdoors in places such as Richmond Park, Battersea Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Hampstead Heath, along the Thames, or in quieter residential streets and favourite local corners that already form part of family life.

I also work more widely across London where the commission is the right fit, but South West and Central London are often a natural centre of gravity for the work.

A portrait commission with care and discretion

Many of the families who commission me want a portrait experience that feels private, unhurried and beautifully managed. They do not want to be pushed through a formula. They want someone who can put people at ease, work gently with children, read a room, and make photographs that carry real emotional value.

That is at the heart of my process.

Commissions begin with a conversation about your family, your home, your children, the spaces that matter to you, and how you see the finished work living in your home. Some families want a single defining portrait. Others want a fuller body of images that together become a visual record of a moment in family life as you evolve through life's chapters.

London family portraiture with atmosphere and longevity

The most successful family portrait is not simply descriptive. It should not only show what your family looked like, but hold something of who you were together in this stage of life.

In London, that may mean portraits made in the rooms where daily life unfolds, in a private garden in spring, in one of the city’s parks under soft evening light, or walking through a part of the city your family returns to again and again. These details matter, they allow the work to feel personal, layered and enduring.

I also photograph family portrait commissions for clients in Surrey, Berkshire and the surrounding areas, but London remains a key part of the work, particularly for families wanting portraits that combine the intimacy of home with the visual richness of the city.

Each family commission is tailored individually, but typically includes:

  • an initial consultation

  • guidance on setting, timing and clothing

  • a carefully paced portrait sitting at home, outdoors or across both

  • a considered edit of the final body of work

  • support in selecting images for display, albums or heirloom pieces

The experience is designed to be calm, thoughtful and beautifully managed from beginning to end.

Frequently asked questions

Where in London do you photograph family portrait commissions?

I work across London, with a particular focus on South West London and Central London, including Chelsea, Kensington, Notting Hill, Holland Park, Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Battersea, Clapham, Fulham, Barnes, Richmond and nearby areas.

Do you photograph family portraits outdoors in London?

Yes. Many London family commissions include time outdoors, whether in a private garden, local park, along the river, or in a favourite part of the city. Outdoor portraiture can bring movement, atmosphere and a strong sense of place to the final work.

Can the portrait session take place partly at home and partly outside?

Very often, yes. Some of the strongest commissions begin at home and then move outdoors, or the reverse. That combination can create a beautiful balance of intimacy, energy and variety while still feeling cohesive.

Do you travel beyond London for family portrait commissions?

Yes. I regularly photograph commissions in Wiltshire, Surrey, Berkshire, Middlesex and across the South of England, as well as in Mallorca.

CATHERINE & JOHN

Gemma has a remarkable ability to tease out the personality of even the most shy of children and record it on camera. There is an ethereal quality to her imagery that evokes a strong emotional reaction to each and every photograph.

JONATHAN & KATE

We will treasure these images forever. When I'm old and wrinkly, I'll be able to show my grandchildren what their parents were like as kids. You captured their spirit and our love as a family perfectly.  We also loved the location you found for our outdoor photoshoot. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
